From Compressor Stations to Gas Turbines: Where Hongbo Self-Cleaning Filters Are Installed

There is a version of the filtration story in which a filter is a box of paper that removes dust. In heavy industry the reality is narrower and more specific: the filter protects a machine, and the machine dictates what the filter must do. The same ZKL series self-cleaning air filter platform goes into very different duties, and the differences are instructive.

Why filtration is not optional in the first place

Start with what unfiltered air does to rotating equipment. When an air power machine draws in dust-laden air, the dust does not simply pass through. It deposits on the fan blades and forms a layer, which changes the mass distribution of the rotor and reduces its dynamic balance accuracy — a slow, cumulative problem that shortens bearing and shaft life in a way that is difficult to attribute later. Meanwhile, chemically active components within the dust attack surfaces and promote corrosion, so the same contamination that unbalances the rotor also rusts the equipment it is sitting on. High-precision intake filtration is therefore not an accessory to an air power installation; it is a prerequisite for the service life the equipment was sold with.

The applications we build for

Industrial compressor stations. The most common case. This covers installations where several small-capacity compressors operate together as well as single large-capacity machines running alone. Multi-unit stations are the harder problem, because each unit draws independently and the combined intake arrangement decides how dust is distributed across the filters.

Raw material air compressors for oxygen production stations. Higher stakes, because everything downstream depends on the air quality the compressor receives. Contamination here does not only wear the compressor; it travels into the separation process.

Blowers for blast furnaces in steel mills. Among the harshest environments we serve. The air around a blast furnace carries heavy particulate loads and the blower is expected to run continuously, so the filter must tolerate both a high dust burden and an unforgiving duty cycle.

Gas turbines of various capacities. Intake air quality affects turbine performance and blade condition directly, and intake pressure loss is a continuous efficiency cost, which is why a self-cleaning design that keeps pressure drop low over long intervals matters more here than peak nominal efficiency.

Diesel engines with long operating periods. Continuous-duty engines accumulate contamination faster than intermittent machines, so the value of automatic reverse-jet cleaning is highest where maintenance windows are scarce and expensive.

Air conditioning supply systems in the chemical fibre and textile industries. Different in character: the dust load may be lower but the process demands stable, clean supply air, and fibre carry-over is a persistent nuisance that a conventional filter handles poorly.

Centralised air conditioning systems with high requirements for air dust content. Where the specification is written as a maximum dust concentration rather than a filtration class, filter selection has to be based on the actual incoming load.

The cross-cutting requirement

Reading that list back, one requirement appears in every case: the filter must keep the equipment behind it running continuously, without being shut down for cartridge service on a short cycle. That is precisely what the self-cleaning architecture is for, and it is why the filtering process is designed around a first coarse filter box followed by a high-efficiency filter cylinder, with cleaning driven by the combined action of gravity, inertia, diffusion and contact retention onto the cylinder surface.

The straightforward consequence for a buyer is this: the right question is not which model has the highest filtration rating, but which configuration keeps pressure drop stable across your operating interval given your actual dust load and moisture conditions. Those two questions produce very different recommendations.

What we need from you to quote

To match a unit properly, we ask for the air volume, the dust concentration and character, moisture or oil mist present in the intake, available installation space, and the connection dimensions of the machine being protected. With those in hand our engineers can either select from the ZKL series or adapt it, and where the duty calls for it, specify the variant with a sewage discharge function for condensing conditions.

Wuxi Hongbo Purification has been producing purification equipment since 2003, with products used across metallurgy, electronics, pharmaceuticals, military industry, petrochemicals, instrumentation, textiles and food processing, and supplied as supporting equipment to customers in Malaysia, Vietnam, Iran and Russia. Our products have passed inspection by the Wuxi Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute and hold ISO9001 quality system certification.
